At this stage, individual player development is paramount. Coaches and teachers should create a stimulating learning environment where the atmosphere is “freedom and fun.”
Small-sided games are in a 5v5 format with goalkeepers. Coaches lead a 15 minute practice / warm-up (dribbling / passing / shooting, etc) prior to the start of the game. The game will be 2x20 minute halves. Players will play a fair amount of time in each position and will rotate through each spot on the field including goalkeeper.
The emphasis is movement exercises and games that promote a feel for the ball while teaching basic principles of play within a fun but structured setting. The 5v5 playing format is used (four field players and one goalkeeper). The games are refereed but no standings are kept. All players should play equal time and try all team positions. Ball size 4.
WISC's Outdoor FUNdamentals program begins in mid-May and runs once a week for 14 weeks. All players participate in an end-of-season ActiveStart Festival (Minifest). During this event, they play a game, receive their participant awards and celebrate the season with fun inflatable games, facepainting, BBQ lunch hosted by WISC.
